There are two methods of playing music to acccompany English morris dancing. The first is a regular, even, rhythm that the dancers follow.

The more interesting way is for the musicians to follow the dancers whatever they are doing at whatever speed. That means that however fast or slow they dance, however long they are in the air or however long it takes to bend their legs to perform slower steps, the dancers know that their musician will support them.
